Sickness / European Health Insurance Card
Anyone who is insured under the Finnish national health insurance scheme is entitled to a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). By presenting this card you can prove your entitlement to necessary medical treatment in the EU and EEA countries and in Switzerland. The card entitles to medical treatment during a temporary stay (e.g. a holiday trip) in another EU/EEA country or in Switzerland if you suddenly fall ill or have an accident.
The European Health Insurance Card enables Finns who are abroad to have medical treatment at the same cost as the nationals of the country they are visiting. The treatment costs are determined on the basis of the national health insurance system of the country of your stay. Medical treatment may, therefore, be completely free of charge or you may have to pay a copayment or the full price depending on the country in question.
The European Health Insurance Card is free of charge. Anyone covered under the Finnish health insurance system can apply for the card including persons whose health care costs Finland is responsible for, for example pensioners living abroad.
