Data content

The Finnish pension system consists mainly of two statutory pension schemes, the national pension scheme and the statutory earnings-related pension scheme. In addition statutory pension provision includes pensions from military injuries insurance, motor liability and workers' compensation, i.e. so-called SOLITA pensions.

The report contains data on the number and average pensions of persons receiving a national pension and/or an earnings-related pension. Pensions paid to recipients living abroad are included. The report is almost exhaustive as concerns statutory pension provision, merely persons drawing a SOLITA pension only are not included in the statistical figures. Besides statutory pensions the report also includes voluntary registered supplementary pension provision financed by the employer.

The various pension benefits cannot be summed up, because a person may receive a pension under the national and earnings-related schemes simultaneously. A person cannot receive several pension benefits as a national pension, but it is possible to receive pensions under different pension acts and to receive different pension benefits in the form of earnings-related pensions.

The total pension can be made up of a national pension paid by Kela, an earnings-related pension, and a SOLITA pension, child increase, front veterans' supplement or additional supplement related to the national pension or earnings-related pension. Pensioners' housing allowance and care allowance were available as pension components until 2007.
