Disability benefits
Data content
Recipients of disability benefits and average amount of benefit (EUR/month/recipient).
Recipients include persons who have been paid benefits for and during the reference month. The average
amount of benefit represents the arithmetic mean of benefit payments for and during the reference month.
Retrospective payments for the period preceding the reference month are not included in the mean.
The disability benefits are shown according to the legislation in effect since the beginning of 2008:
Disability allowance for children under the age of 16, disability allowance for persons aged 16 or over,
care allowance for pensioners, and dietary grant.
Variables and classifications
- Benefit category (Disability allowance for children under the age of 16, Disability allowance for
persons aged 16 or over, Care allowance for pensioners, Dietary grant)
- Main disease category. The main categories consist of three-digit diagnoses according to the ICD-10
classification. The basis for the classification is the main illness describing the reason for the disease
which affected the awarding of the benefit. The recipient is included in the statistics according to the main
disease category in which the diagnosis on the basis of which the benefit was awarded belongs.
- Time period (End of year)
- Region
- Sex
- Age group (0–4 years, 5–9 years, …, 95–99 years, over 99 years)
- Type of benefit (Basic rate of allowance, Middle rate of allowance, Highest rate of allowance,
Grandfathered allowance).
Grandfathered allowances consist of care allowances for pensioners paid out until 1 July 1988 as
either smaller or larger helplessness supplements and of disability allowances paid out under the
legislation in effect until 1 January 1989. These allowances are paid at their existing rates even
if they otherwise would have been reduced or discontinued as a result of the legislative changes.
