Variables and classifications
- Means of transportation. The data on reimbursements for
illness-related travel costs are included in the statistics for the means
of transportation (taxi, ambulance, own car etc.) which was used for the
journey. The means of transportation is stated as 'Travel chain' when the
person has used several means of transportation for a one-way journey. The
value for the means of transportation variable is given as 'Professional'
when a health care professional has visited the patient and charges the
patient for the travel costs. The patient receives reimbursement for the
travel costs from the National Health Insurance scheme. 'Transfer' (further
transportation) is given as the data on means of transportation as regards
ambulance transportation when a person is transported to e.g. a municipal
healthcare centre and from the healthcare centre with ambulance to the
central hospital. The variable value is given as 'Cancelled transportation'
as regards ambulance transportation when a patient has not been transported
for treatment, but instead he/she has received treatment locally e.g. through first aid.
- Time period. The variable states the year during which the
reimbursements for illness-related travel costs which the statistics referto have been paid out.
- Geographical focus. The smallest unit is the municipality, from
which larger units are formed. The data on municipality is based on the
municipality of residence of the persons who have received reimbursement
for illness-related travel costs. Data on reimbursements for
illness-related travel costs are included in the statistics for a certain
municipality for the persons who had the municipality in question as their
municipality of residence at the end of the reference year.
