Data content
The insured person receives reimbursement from the National Health Insurance scheme for part of the fees charged by doctors in private practice for examinations and treatments provided.
The statistics on specialist doctors' fees reimbursed from the National Health Insurance scheme include
- Number of persons who have received reimbursement for fees charged by a specialist.
- Number of reimbursed visits to a specialist. The number also includes the
number of medical statements and of renewals of prescriptions (not renewals via a pharmacy).
- Amounts in euro of the fees charged for visits to a specialist and
of the reimbursements paid for them.
- Reimbursement percentage. The figure indicates the percentage share of the
doctors' fees charged which is reimbursed to the insured person from the National Health Insurance scheme.
- Ratio costs (=fees charged) per visit.
Variables and classifications
- Medical specialties. Until the end of 2022, doctors whose fees
were reimbursed according to the fixed charges for reimbursement of specialists' fees
were classified as specialists in the statistics. Starting in 2023,
doctors with specialist training that was valid at the end of the reference period have been classified as specialists.
A specialist is included in the statistics for the specialisation
for which they have most recently been updated in Kela's register on health care personnel.
- Reference period. The variable states the year during which the reimbursements
for specialists' fees which the statistics refer to have been paid out.
- Geographical focus. Municipality is the smallest regional unit used, and larger units
are formed from it. The data on municipality is based on the municipality of residence of the persons
who have received reimbursement for doctors' fees. Data on reimbursements for doctors' fees are included
in the statistics for a certain municipality for the persons who had the municipality in question as
their municipality of residence at the end of the statistical reference year.

Annual data available from 2016 onwards.

Annually updated in January.
