Families with children / Maternity, paternity and parental allowances
This report shows the number of mothers and fathers who received maternity, paternity or parental allowance during the reference period, analysed by benefit category, as well as the amount of allowances paid out, the number of reimbursed days, and the average rate of the allowance.
Women who have been pregnant for at least 154 days are entitled to maternity allowance on the basis of pregnancy and childbirth. The maternity allowance is payable for 105 working days. Pregnant women are eligible for a special maternity allowance if their assignments or circumstances at work pose a health risk to their baby.
Paternity allowance is payable to fathers who take a leave from their job in order to participate in the care of their child. Paternity allowance is payable for maximum 18 working days during the maternity and parental allowance period.
After the parental allowance payment period, paternity allowance is payable for a maximum of 54 working days. The days for which fathers were paid paternity allowance under the daddy-month system in force until 2013 are included in this category. The days for which parental allowance was paid during the daddy month are included under ”Parental allowance”. The 'Daddy month' included the last 12 working days in the parental allowance payment period and 1–24 days of paternity allowance.
Parental allowance is payable for either the mother or the father depending on which of them looks after their child. The category ”Parental allowance” also includes fathers who have been paid parental allowance during the daddy month.
The mother and the father can be paid partial parental allowance if they work part time and share the care of their child. The partial parental allowance is half of the parental allowance that would otherwise be paid.
